A Positive Thought for Today

9/11/2014 - PARCR Admin

Read this excerpt from a Romanian Newspaper. The article was written by Mr. Cornel Nistorescu and published under the title 'C'ntarea Americii, meaning 'Ode ToAmerica ') in the Romanian newspaper Evenimentulzilei 'The Daily Event' or 'News of the Day'.

~An Ode to America ~

Why are Americans so united? They would not resemble one another even if you painted them all one color! They speak all the languages of the world and form an astonishing mixture of civilizations and religious beliefs.

On 9/11, the American tragedy turned three hundred million people into a hand put on the heart. Nobody rushed to accuse the White House, the Army, or the Secret Service that they are only a bunch of losers. Nobody rushed to empty their bank accounts.

Nobody rushed out onto the streets nearby to gape about. >Instead the Americans volunteered to donate blood and to give a helping hand. After the first moments of panic, they raised their flag over the smoking ruins, putting on T-shirts, caps and ties in the colors of the national flag. They placed flags on buildings and cars as if in every place and on every car a government official or the president was passing. On every occasion, they started singing: 'God Bless America !'

I watched the live broadcast and rerun after rerun for hours listening to the story of the guy who went down one hundred floors with a woman in a wheelchair without knowing who she was, or of the Californian hockey player, who gave his life fighting with the terrorists and prevented the plane from hitting a target that could have killed other hundreds or thousands of people.

How on earth were they able to respond united as one human being? Imperceptibly, with every word and musical note, the memory of some turned into a modern myth of tragic heroes. And with every phone call, millions and millions of dollars were put into collection aimed at rewarding not a man or a family, but a spirit, which no money can buy. What on earth unites the Americans in such a way? Their land? Their history? Their economic Power? Money? I tried for hours to find an answer, humming songs and murmuring phrases with the risk of sounding commonplace, I thought things over, I reached but only one conclusion... Only freedom can work such miracles.

Legislative Alert

6/12/2014 - PARCR Admin

On Tuesday June 10, 2014 we were notified by Leading Age PA that in order to meet procedural deadlines, the House introduced HB 2328, the long-awaited budget bill for fiscal year (FY) 2014-15. The bill is a copy of the budget that was approved for FY 2013-14 and it will serve as a starting point for many amendments and negotiations to come. LeadingAge PA advocated with both the legislature and the Governor's Office for increases from last year's reimbursement rates. The biggest concern with the current fiscal shortfall is the reduction in the Federal Medical Assistance Percentage (FMAP) that may result in a loss of over $300 million for the Medical Assistance (MA) program.

It is important that the legislatures know and understand that the current MA funding at last year's appropriation amount is far from what is needed to maintain the level of care expected by our residents. What would be worse is if last year's funding levels were reduced this year because the state did not appropriate funding to offset the loss of FMAP funding. LeadingAge PA is currently working on launching a letter writing campaign for members to communicate this important issue to your legislators.

Please take time to speak with your Community’s Executive Director/CEO for more detailed information. We, PARCR, will keep you informed as we receive additional information.

As Community Representatives, we may be calling upon you to contact your legislators to inform them of how our Communities will be impacted and ask the legislators' assistance in addressing the needs of our residents.

Thank you, George

President's Message: Dr. Linda Rhodes

11/11/2013 - PARCR Admin

If I could make one recommendation to each senior citizen residing in a Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC), I would suggest that they become acquainted with the writing of Dr. Linda Rhodes, whose column appears in the Harrisburg Patriot News each Sunday. Dr. Rhodes is a former Secretary of Ageing of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the author of a book entitled, "The Essential Guide to Caring for Ageing Parents".

Several articles have appeared in the Patriot News that are important to Seniors and should be read. Dr. Rhodes writes on October 27, 2013 that "Seniors Should Sort Through Their Options for Flu Shots". She explains in detail that there are four (4) options available. You are advised to consult with your physician as to which option is best for you.

On November 3, 2013 she warns us about "Hospitalization: What to Know if You are on Medicare". She outlines the difference of being classified as "inpatient" or "under observation" when admitted to the hospital. Should you remain under observation, then sent to a skilled nursing or rehabilitation unit for additional care, Medicare would not cover your expenses. This information is essential for every Senior as the financial implications could be catastrophic.

On November 10, 2013 Dr. Rhodes writes, "As We Age, Nutritional Choices are More Vital". She describes the impact that improper diet has on the elderly and how to deal with it. The risk of dehydration, the importance of good dental health, the problems of multiple prescription drugs, and the effects of eating alone are also discussed. Each are important to the well being of the individual.

These articles and other materials written by Dr. Rhodes can be accessed by clicking here, or access and search Dr. Linda Rhodes.
